Greene County, Illinois, USA

 

Named for Nathaniel Greene

Nathaniel Greene (1742-1786) was a Major General in the American Revolution and became famous for his service in the southern region of the 13 Colonies.

Established in 1821

Originally part of Madison County, the initial Greene County boundaries encompassed present day Jersey County, which was established in 1839.
